SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST

Surgical technologists usually work in the operating room and perform a variety of tasks including preparing instruments and materials such as sutures, tubing and sponges, for use at the operating table. Preoperative duties include collecting, checking and organizing equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order. Common duties include operating sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units and diagnostic equipment.

HOW DO I BECOME A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST?

While in high school it is recommended that you take courses in basic mathematics, English, and the social, physical and biological sciences.

Graduation from high school or its equivalent (GED) is required. Educational programs vary in length from one to two years and result in a certificate or associate’s degree. Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is possible through the successful completion of a national certifying examination.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN SCHOOL?

A one year program in Surgical Technology usually includes course work in medical-legal aspects of surgery, surgical instruments, surgical techniques, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. A clinical placement in a surgery center or hospital is a required component of the academic program.

LIFE AFTER GRADUATION

The employment outlook for surgical technologists is excellent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the profession is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations.

Most surgical technicians work in operating rooms which are typically clean, brightly lit and quiet. Many find employment in emergency rooms and out-patient surgical centers. At times they may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. While in the operating room they have to stand for long periods and must concentrate on their work for hours at a time. They usually work rotating shifts with a standard hospital work day. Most are required to be periodically “on call,” and to work on short notice in cases of emergency.
