Brief Description

Cardiovascular technologists run tests on persons suffering from heart or circulatory problems.  Some procedures, termed invasive, involve injecting liquid dyes or inserting a tube into the body.   Other procedures are noninvasive and involve attaching monitors, such as electrodes, to the body to record the patient’s heart rate.  Both specialties within this field use sophisticated testing procedures to record and analyze the functioning of the heart and blood vessels.  Cardiovascular technologists work under the supervision of a physician called a cardiologist.

HOW DO I BECOME A CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGIST?

To prepare for a training program, it is recommended that high school course work include health, biology, anatomy, physiology, typing, and computer science.

Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED), or qualifications in a clinically related allied health profession is required to gain admission to a training program.  Training programs are offered at community and junior colleges and generally take 12-24 months to complete.  Graduates may receive certification as registered cardiovascular technologists (RCVT) by meeting established educational and experience standards and by passing a national exam.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN SCHOOL?

Training for the cardiovascular technologist involves learning the fundamental theory, operation and maintenance of complex cardiology equipment.  Classroom and clinical experience is provided to train the technologist to assist with complex catheterization and angiographies.

LIFE AFTER GRADUATION

The job outlook for cardiovascular technologists is excellent through the next decade.  Most cardiovascular technologists are employed in hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, and outpatient facilities.  They generally work a 40-hour week on a day-shift schedule.
